There are not many people who I would wake up at 5 AM for.
But Tanya Rose Bordner is one of them.
Tanya owns Juice Box Yoga (JBY) located in Reno, Nevada. I started waking up early to attend class at the studio before work. Before I knew it, I was waking up early for fun, even on days when I didn’t have to be at work first thing in the morning. Anyone who knows me understands that I hate getting up early in the morning…or, at least I did, before I met Tanya.
Tanya started the weekly Karma class at JBY, where class admission is by donation. The proceeds are given to “karma recipients”, which are worthy causes that help our community. It’s a great way for yogis to try out the studio without a large financial investment, while also becoming emotionally connected to important causes. Most recently, the weekly Karma classes helps Advocates for Rural Community Health, a nonprofit that sends Nevada medical students to help health clinics in Uganda.

Diversity makes our practice whole and complete
“There are those of us too who are just so much more comfortable taking care of other people, and it’s really hard taking care of ourselves. So for me, having twins and a husband as my main focus, I didn’t really see myself as important in the picture. But no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, you are part of the picture. So when you walk through this door you are in our picture. And so whether you’re White, Black, Asian, tall, short, young, or old, you’re a part of the picture. And you’re an important part of the picture.”
“This is a yoga place as far as I’m concerned. For a lot of people, this is their sanctuary, their church, or their spiritual landing place where it’s safe for them. For me that was a huge thing. Having just the words, the quiet, a place where I can go and see myself. Where I can just go and do the work and get it done without the distraction, was huge.”
“Diversity makes our practice whole and complete. It’s the way it should be. We live in a diverse world, in a diverse country, in a diverse community. So everything that we do should be for everybody.”
Yoga helps you see yourself for the first time
“When I first started [Bikram yoga], I was forty-something pounds overweight. I was on all kinds of prescription medication to get rid of whatever thing that I was feeling that I didn’t want to feel. Whether it was anxiety, or pain, or whatever. I was definitely scared, I definitely had a million excuses why I didn’t want to take care of myself.”
“I didn’t realize that I was invisible and I was actually pretty comfortable with being invisible. It was more uncomfortable for me to step out of that and start to see myself. And that’s what’s amazing about doing Bikram yoga. The foundation of looking through the mirror for ninety minutes was a huge opportunity for me to see myself for the first time.”
“I’m looking at myself in the mirror and saying to myself ‘Who are you? When was the last time you looked in the mirror and saw yourself?’ Not ‘Oh, I put on this mascara or I had something stuck in my eye, or do I have an underwear line?’ But when was the last time you looked at yourself, and saw you, and were not invisible? Until you start to see yourself, others can’t see you either.”
Maybe you can’t change the world- but you can change the fifty mile radius around you
“We’re locally owned, we’re family run. Our goal has always been and always will be to create a safe place for our community to land, whether it be for fitness or yoga. Our goal is so they can see themselves and find themselves and be a better version of themselves when they walk out of those doors. Everything we do in here affects everything we do out there.”
“The reason the Karma class started was my kids had a little boy who they were in class with, and his mom was diagnosed with cancer. They were Hispanic, they had no funds, no insurance. His mom needed a treatment that was going to cost several thousand dollars. The Truckee community came together through the Karma class to raise money that was needed. So that was the first Karma class.”
“I can’t change the world, but I would like to try to impact the fifty mile radius around me. I hope that starts something, that then those people fan out on their own fifty mile radiuses. Eventually that feeling and that vibe is something that we’re spreading beyond even our community.”
“The hope is that at some point, the yoga starts to impact you on an emotional and spiritual level as well. So when you’re looking in the mirror and start to see change happen, you’re witnessing it, noticing it, and then you step out of room. And you say, ‘Look at that blue sky. Look at those green trees.’ When you start to get used to seeing, then you see it everywhere you go. And you feel it everywhere you go. It starts to break us out of that outer shell or casing that we create over our lives to protect ourselves. It gives us an opportunity to be a little bit more raw, a little bit more connected, a little bit more vulnerable.”
The yoga itself doesn’t change- you change
“I mean I think that’s the biggest thing, is that we all worry so much and ultimately the plan is the plan. It all works out eventually. I mean, I guess from my situation I can say that. It’s not like I had the easiest life but it’s all relative. If you have good intention and your heart is in the right place, then everything’s going to work out.”
“It’s almost like there’s a little voice in my head, not to sound crazy, but it’s constantly saying ‘Remember your purpose. What’s your purpose in this, what’s your purpose in that, does this serve the purpose?’ It’s just telling myself that it’s all going to be okay.”
“I love both of my kids, I love both of my studios. If it weren’t for Bikram yoga, if I’d done Vinyasa first, I wouldn’t be sitting here right now. There was something about the magic of Bikram yoga. The fact that it was the same every single time, that for me was the right thing and was exactly what I needed. That constant and the continuum of something. And then the ability to see that it didn’t change, but I changed.”
